Lifestyles & Recreation When Daniel Boone first saw the untamed beauty of Kentucky, he knew this land represented opportunity. That first promise has held true for more than two hundred years, and Kentucky has welcomed individuals and families eager to create a better life for themselves. Kentucky's people take pride in their work whether it's raising fast horses on a Bluegrass farm or making fine cars at the Toyota plant in Georgetown. Nevertheless, Kentuckians also enjoy the Commonwealth's parks, lakes, rivers, golf courses and historic sites. All is not work and play, for religious values are also important to Kentucky's people, who worship in tiny churches in the hills as well as huge cathedrals in the cities. Kentucky contains all the ingredients for a good life both at work and at home. Everywhere you look in Kentucky, there's a new game in town. Georgetown, Kentucky, is home of the Cincinnati Bengals' training camp, which is held at Georgetown College's Rawlings Stadium. Lexington is home of the perennial champion Kentucky Wildcats as well as hockey's Thoroughblades, a minor league affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Louisville is home of Valhalla Golf Course that will host the PGA Championship in 2000 and in 2004 as well as the Ryder Cup in 2007. Louisville is also home of the Cincinnati Reds triple A team the River Bats. As recreational activities go, Kentucky offers lakes and rivers perfect for boating or any water activity. 80% of the nations' houseboats are built in Somerset Kentucky, located in the south central part of the state. With Kentucky Lake in the eastern part of the state and Cumberland Lake in the south central section, Kentuckians have many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Golf courses, as an example, abound, offering any challenger a course that coincides with their caliber of play. Kentucky simply has an array of recreation choices, reflecting the vibrant, active nature of its citizens. Many groups like the new Governor's Council on Sports, Physical Activity and Wellness are actively promoting and planning for tomorrow in terms of both facility use and increased options for Kentuckians.
