LOUISVILLE
Louisville Lands Aircraft Maintenance Company

Commercial Aircraft Services, a Cincinnati-based company that provides repair and maintenance for jet aircraft, has announced that it will be moving its entire operation to Louisville.

The company is planning to lease and develop a 22-acre site at Louisville International Airport, where it will construct a 120,000-square-foot hangar and office complex. The project, estimated at $19 million, is expected to be complete by the second quarter of next year.

Although Commercial Aircraft Services considered relocating to other cities in Ohio, Louisville was ultimately selected after the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority approved tax credits of up to $20 million over a 10-year time span, said company president Michael Fricker.

The company expects to hire some 350 workers during its first year, with the overall starting pay averaging $32,600.

The Road to Health

Ephraim McDowell's new mobile mammography unit will serve 19 counties.

A new mobile mammography unit will be traveling throughout the region in an effort by Ephraim McDowell Health to make breast cancer screenings more readily available for women.

The Commonwealth's high rate of breast cancer coupled with one of the lowest screen rates in the country was the primary factor in the hospital's decision to purchase the unit.

"We really want to reach the women who, for whatever reason, find it difficult to schedule a mammogram, said Mary Begley, director of marketing at Ephraim McDowell Health.

Begley noted that initial studies and surveys indicated that 60 percent of people who had used mobile services were first-time users of a mammography service. "These are extremely heartening statistics," she added.

The mobile unit, which is only the second of its kind in Kentucky (the other is operated by Brown Cancer Center in Louisville), is licensed for use in an 18country area surrounding Boyle County.

The unit is staffed by two registered technologists and is equipped with a waiting area, changing room mammography suite and a processing area. Results of the tests will be read by radiologists at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

The mobile unit brings "a crucial service to our patients rather than taking a passive stance and waiting for them to come to us," Begley emphasized. "This process could save lives."
