Jaguars have a long and distinguished past. From several wins at LeMan to years spent touring from the highlands to beyond, Jaguar has won a loyal and respected following with the posh elite.

Jaguar has now attempted to play on that name recognition by introducing its newest and least expensive offering, the S-Type. Aimed squarely at the BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E-class, Jaguar has devised an interesting, if not thoroughly British luxury car.

The body design evokes a sense of history and nostalgia. Sure to attract interest with a younger crowd, the classy curves harken back to previous generation Jags. Starting with the four rounded headlights to the squared-off rear, the S-Type shows a individuality lost on most makes.

Performance is an important part of the Jaguar lineage and this model more than holds-up its end of the bargain. Either the standard V-6 or optional V-8 provide a spirited alternative to those fed a diet rich in German sedans. The 5-speed automatic transmission allows the driver to choose between either an effortless or sporty commute by manually down and upshifting.

The car’s double-wishbone suspension adheres to the Jaguar tradition of ride comfort and handling competence. The optional sport package, called CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension) is programmed to maximize comfort, handling and driver control.

Standard ABS and power-assisted 4-wheel discs stop the Jag effortlessly. The S-Type is outfitted with a sophisticated traction control system that helps the driver maintain control in slippery conditions. The system monitors wheelspin via wheel-mounted sensors, and introduces brake intervention and engine torque reduction to ensure control.

One disadvantage with its swept-back windshield and lithe appearance is a lack of passenger space. Though available for four passengers, the S-type has some quirky seating and pillar positions which can make you do a double-take when changing lanes. Aside from these minor considerations, the interior offers much of what makes Jaguar Jaguar; seemingly endless miles of Connolly leather and wood that makes you want to don a smoking jacket and retire next to the fireplace.

Considering passenger comfort and convenience, Jaguar has introduced and interesting feature that’s a first in any car: a voice-activated control system. Enabling you to manipulate primary functions including interior temperature, radio and cell phone controls (allowing you to leave the butler at home), the eyes can stay on the road and not the dash.

Jaguar has introduced a car which makes a significant impression in the import luxury market. The most curvaceous leather-clad British import since Ms. Diana Rigg, the S-Type is a thoroughly modern interpretation of past luxury sedans.
