'98 Protecting Yourself from Scam Artists
Last month, the Better Business Bureau warned Kentuckians
of a group of itinerant con artists traveling through the area. One unfortunate victim of
the latest scam reported that after paying $1,000 to have his barn painted, he watched in
dismay as the "paint" washed off after the first rainfall.
Tracey McLarney, president and CEO of the Better Business
Bureau, emphasizes that the best advice for consumers is "to become educated as to
how these schemers work and then to steer clear!"
McLarney offers the following advice:
- If you really need work done around your business or home,
comparison shop quality as well as price. Obtain at least three detailed, written
estimates comparing similar materials, labor and time frames. A good rule of thumb is to
go with the middle price quote.
- Find out if the company and/or contractor is properly
licensed, bonded, and/or insured.
- Ask for recommendations from friends and relatives who used
a contractor for similar work and check out each prospective firm's reliability report
with your BBB by calling (800) 606-6668, available 24 hours a day. You can also request a
member referral list by industry, which will provide you with an excellent starting point
in your search for a reputable business.
- Do not ever pay for the project up front, nor should you
ever pay in cash. If your request to pay by check is not accepted, be wary of doing
business with that person.
- Find out specific information about the company, such as
name, address, phone and owner. An independent contractor or an out-of-state company may
be impossible to contact after the money has been paid. Even if you have a written or
implied warranty, it will be useless if there is no way to get in touch with the company.
