2002 Governor's Awards in the Arts
Capital Rotunda - Frankfort, Ky. - March 4, 2003

Corporations, artists and educators were honored by Gov. Paul Patton and his staff in a special March 4th ceremony for their contributions to the arts in Kentucky in 2002. Recipients of the award were each presented a handmade dulcimer made by famed Kentucky craftsman and musician Homer Ledford.

Recipients of the 2002 Governor’s Awards in the Arts included:

  • The Milner Award went to Donna S. Hall, one of Kentucky’s most sought-after volunteers in the arts and education.
  • The National Award went to sculptor John Henry, who is originally from Lexington.
  • Moses Goldberg was the recipient of the Artist Award for his lifetime achievement at Louisville’s Stage One Professional Theatre for Young Audiences.
  • Fifth Third Bank, represented by its Lexington CEO Sam Barnes, received the Business Award for its efforts promoting the arts.
  • Jarrett Boyd, director of the Carroll County Library, received the Community Arts Award – Individual.
  • The Louisville Central Community Centers Inc. was awarded the Community Arts Award – Organization. It was represented by its Coordinator of Youth Education and Fine Art, Geraldine Woods.
  • The recipient of the Education Award was Deborah M. Shannon of the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
  • The Folk Heritage Award went to WKU professor Lynwood Montell for his efforts establishing the school’s Folk Studies Program and his prolific books.
  • The Government Award went to the City of Paducah for its Artist Relocation Program.
  • The Lane Report received the Media Award for its 18-year-old commitment to covering and promoting the arts in Kentucky.

Following the awards ceremony, award recipients attended a special luncheon in their honor at the Governor’s Mansion, where they were hosted by Kentucky’s First Lady, Judi Patton.
