Media

One way to assess an area's economic health is to look at the various media outlets available to entertain, inform and educate the people living in the region. In Central Kentucky, there is a wide variety of newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations.

In Lexington, the Lexington Herald-Leader provides comprehensive general news coverage. It circulates through more than half of the Commonwealth, from the counties on the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky south to Tennessee and eastward to the Kentucky-Virginia border. Most larger cities surrounding Lexington support at least one community newspaper as well, and many of these publish daily editions.

The Lane Report is Central Kentucky's monthly business magazine. Its business-oriented editorial philosophy provides the latest economic news as well as in-depth stories on issues important to company owners, managers and workers.

All major television networks are represented by strong, community-minded affiliates in Lexington. WLEX-TV (NBC), WTVQ-TV (ABC), WKYT-TV (CBS) and WDKY (Fox) provide both local and network programming as well as a strong line-up of news and public affairs programs.

Kentucky Educational Television (KET) provides nearly 150 instructional series to elementary and secondary schools. In 1997, it won two regional Emmys and best public television program of the year. KET's original arts and public affairs programming earned it a 1996 Kentucky Governor's Media Award in the Arts. KET coverage of the state legislature and all state-wide elections continues to win rave reviews of critics throughout the state. Another service offered by KET is its closed-caption center to provide specially processed programming for the hearing impaired.

More than three dozen AM and FM radio stations serve the Central Kentucky area. Formats include full-service, talk, country, pop, rock, oldies, progressive, adult-oriented and religious. Fans tune in to WVLK-Am and FM, originating stations for University of Kentucky football and basketball broadcasts.
