PERSPECTIVE - March 2002
by Pat Freibert

Of Paramount Importance
The United States is an island of freedom, worthy of protection

The paradoxical events since the attack on America September 11 have been dizzying for even the calmest Americans. Our world changed that day.

The level of patriotism, placing respect and support for country above self, has been reborn across the land. The historical generosity of Americans has powerfully manifested itself once again in donations to victims of this terrorist attack.

On the other hand, we have also observed the worst of America in some of the responses of a minority of citizens. Following the terrorist attack, Harvard University’s president made a patriotic speech criticizing terrorism and imploring Harvard to support our men and women in uniform. Can you believe he came under fire for his speech by self-appointed and elitist academic ingrates?

A nurse was fired for informing the FBI that one of the terrorists had earlier been treated at the hospital where she worked.

A librarian who told the FBI that one terrorist suspect had been in her library was reprimanded by the American Library Association, whose policy apparently grants privacy to library users, regardless of whether they are planning terrorist attacks or not.

Americans need reminding that our Constitution treats wartime differently from peacetime. While many Americans have put their lives on the line halfway around the world in Afghanistan, terrorists cells also exist here in America as well as in other countries and continue to imperil our citizens and other civilized people.

Unless America reforms uncontrolled immigration, trained terrorists will continue to menace our civilized society.

Our Immigration Service is so overwhelmed it cannot screen out applicants with criminal records or communicable diseases, not to mention terrorist groups. It cannot even find the 250,000 illegal aliens it has already identified for deportation.

The 1990 Kennedy Immigration Act annually admits 50,000 “Diversity Immigrants” through a lottery system that includes people from all seven countries listed by the State Department as state sponsors of terrorism.

Legal immigration has increased from 178,000 in 1965 to more than a million currently. Add this to the number of illegal immigrants and it’s easy to see why the Immigration and Naturalization Service is completely swamped.

When America puts its best foot forward, we are truly a great country. When it puts its worst foot forward, it trivializes all who sacrificed their lives to secure our liberty on this island of freedom we call the United States of America.
