TOURISM - January
'98 Conventions Strengthen Local Economy Lexington was the site of some 285 meetings and conventions during fiscal '96-'97, generating an economic impact of approximately $40 million for the Lexington/Fayette County area, according to reports from the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau (LCVB). Shawn Braden, vice president of sales and marketing for the LCVB, notes that local residents are responsible for nearly 50 percent of the meetings and conventions the city books. "Strong local support and community involvement can give Lexington a competitive edge over destinations that have larger convention centers, more hotel rooms, or more desirable transportation services," she notes. As a result, the LCVB is implementing a number of new programs to increase community involvement even more. For information on how you can become more involved, call 800/8481224 or 606/233-1221 or visit the LCVB Web site at www.visitlex.com.
