YOUNG
PROFESSIONALS - October 2002 by Jennifer Kustes Making Connections As fellow Lexington Young Professionals Association member Thomas Thornberry and I traveled from Lexington to make personal contact with our Louisville counterparts, we could not have hoped for a better reception from the Young Professionals Association of Louisville. As we arrived at the sign-in table at the third annual YPALooza party, there was an immediate sense of welcome and enthusiasm The party took place at the Rock Creek Riding Club in Louisville. The lush grounds near the stables provided an ideal backdrop for young professionals to get together on a warm summer night. As the band played, we drifted among groups of young professionals engaged in conversation and were reminded of the many LYPA gatherings we had attended. Overall, YPAL provided a fun atmosphere for young professionals to network and mingle, and they also provided the welcome to bridge the gap between young professionals in two cities. We thank them for receiving us so well, and we look forward to more communications between LYPA and YPAL. LYPA has kicked off its Opening Doors program, which matches young professionals with Lexington community leaders in a one-on-one setting. Each month the young professional will meet with a different community leader for lunch. Those who can form a lasting mentoring relationship are encouraged to do so. Opening Doors is designed to create avenues for LYPA members to interact with the leaders whose support can be a positive influence not only on their careers, but an example for giving back to the community in a meaningful and beneficial way. LYPA Vice President Eric Lycan said, We were searching for ideas that could provide tangible and measurable career progress to our members, and one way to do that was to introduce them on a personal level to the significant people in the business community. What has impressed me the most about the experience is that the Lexington community so quickly and eagerly embraced the idea, and so many people were willing to dedicate their time and effort, Lycan said. LYPA members now know that their efforts will be met with enthusiasm and appreciation, and the community now knows its young people are just waiting for the invitation to get involved. LYPA is going to continue to find ways to communicate with the community and provide a link between Lexingtons current generation of leaders and its next, Lycan said. At kickoff, there were 90 participants in Opening Doors, with more joining every day. The program is open to dues-paying LYPA members. The community leaders participating are: Judge John Adams, Christopher Alexander, Sam Barnes, Mitch Barnhart, Amanda Bennett, Steve Beshear, Mark Boison, Anita Britton, Judge Kim Bunnell, Terry Burkhart, Ralph Coldiron, Scott Crosbie, Brad Cowgill, Don Cutter, Ray Davis, Dee Fizzdale, Pierce Hamblin, Paula Hanson, Dr. Zelia Holloway, Teresa Isaac, Tim Kelly, Ed Lane, Representative Stan Lee, David Lord, Sylvia Lovely, Rose Lucas, Wayne Martin, Mayor Pam Miller, Jim Newberry, Nick Nicholson, Judge Mary Noble, David OBryan, Judge Rebecca Overstreet, Kathy Plomin, Susan Rayer, Rhonda Reeves, Jim Richardson, Al Rider, John Shropshire, Mary Ellen Slone, Alan Stein, Darby Turner, Laura Voss, and Isabel Yates. For more information on becoming involved with LYPA or Opening Doors as a community leader or young professional, contact Eric Lycan at elycan@insightbb.com or (859) 621-8888.
