YOUNG PROFESSIONALS - November 2002
by Jennifer Kustes

New Beginnings
Young professional association introduces new leadership

Members of the Lexington Young Professionals Association recently gathered for their second annual meeting, a semi-formal event that celebrated LYPA’s second year as part of the Lexington community and introduced members to the new leaders who will determine LYPA’s direction in the year to come.

The LYPA Annual Meeting was held at the University Club of Kentucky’s outdoor pavilion and featured a buffet-style dinner, where LYPA members had the chance to eat and chat with the sponsors and mentors in attendance.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Darby Turner of Greenbaum, Doll, McDonald.

Following Turner’s remarks, Immediate Past President Kimberly Coleman officially passed the gavel of leadership over to LYPA’s new president, Joy Sanders. Sanders then addressed the gathering with her hopes for the coming year, emphasizing LYPA’s role in the community as a professional organization. She also highlighted LYPA’s mission to provide professional development opportunities for its members and to foster their civic and personal career growth, so that members can strive to improve the quality of life in the Lexington area.

The new LYPA slate of leadership was introduced. The 2002-2003 officers are: Sanders, Vice President Eric Lycan, Secretary Dawn Brockman, and Treasurer Jim Wombles. The Steering Council members are: Membership Chair Veronica Roeder, Professional Development Chair Jason Miller, Community Involvement Chair Tanzi Merritt, Communications Chair Kara MacDonald, and Financial Development Chair Richard Stump. The board of directors includes: Kimberly Coleman, John Shropshire, Kathy Plomin, Logan Hillyard, Colleen Blouin, Phil Holoubek, and David Dickens.

YPAL announces new dues structure
Young Professionals Association of Louisville President Jessica White recently announced a new membership dues structure for individual and corporate members. The change was implemented in order to further YPAL’s mission and enhance YPAL’s offering of quality programs and member benefits.

In the past year, YPAL has hosted a wide range of networking events, professional development seminars, public issue forums, projects, and opportunities for active civic involvement. These included bi-monthly networking events, a four-part professional development series on career planning, the Kentucky Harvest Million in a Month food drive and placement on non-profit and government boards. YPAL also hosted its first annual dinner, which featured Bill Samuels, Jr., CEO of Makers Mark, Inc., as keynote speaker.

In addition to YPAL-hosted events and opportunities, YPAL also gave its members numerous other philanthropic and service opportunities on behalf of many community-minded organizations in need of young professional volunteers. Members also receive discounts on goods and services at local businesses, scholarship opportunities from Bellarmine University for graduate degree programs beginning in Spring 2003, special member pricing to all YPAL paid events, opportunities for career growth and professional development, and a new job search portal alliance from Greater Louisville, Inc.
