YOUNG
PROFESSIONALS - June 2002 by Jennifer Kustes Looking Forward The Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL) and the Lexington Young Professionals Association (LYPA) have been busy with many diverse activities recently, ranging from electing new leaders to upgrading communications tools. A new slate of leaders has been elected to YPAL through its next year. The new leaders come from diverse backgrounds and have many talents, and they have laid out several exciting goals and plans. The new leaders make up YPALs Executive Committee. Their terms began on June 1 and go through May 31, 2003. They are: Executive Committee: President Jessica White; Vice President of Marketing Steve Flores; Vice President of Development David Minks; Vice President of Member Services Robin Miller; Vice President of Community Outreach Kris Carlton; Secretary Kim Spurlock; Treasurer Will be filled by appointment of the President. Chair positions: Community Relations Laura Meadows; Diversity Haven Harrington; Electronic Communications Chris Newton; Professional Development Sally Stevenson; Workforce Development Mark Shee; Advocacy Jay Blanton; Membership Cynthia Spalding Knapek; Public Relations Whitney Vogel; Entertainment Will be filled by appointment of the President. LYPA recently featured a special event in conjunction with the Lexington Art Leagues Fourth Friday. The two organizations joined together to present a photography exhibit entitled A Day in the Life of Lexington, at the Lexington Art Leagues temporary home at Meridian Communications. (Its permanent location, the Loudoun House, is undergoing a remodel.) LYPAs Arts and Cultural Committee came up with the idea and helped organize it. We thought it would be good to allow people who arent artists to get into it, to encourage everyone in the community to get into photography and promote Lexington, said Polly Singer, an Arts and Cultural Committee member and executive director of the Lexington Art League. The exhibit presented photographs from a contest in which Fayette County residents took pictures around Lexington on a designated day. The photos were judged in categories including Historical, Sports, Avant Garde/Cutting Edge, Best Representation of Lexington, Best Youth and Best of Show. Cash prizes were awarded. Besides the viewing and judging of the photographs, food was catered by Macaroni Grill, who served delicious pasta dishes. Voodoo Symphony provided the music, playing covers of modern rock favorites. Both LYPA and YPAL provide opportunities for their members to develop their careers through workshops and seminars. LYPAs most recent seminar on Preventing Career Burnout was conducted by Alan Rider, career advisor for Bernard Haldane Associates, and Thomas Thornberry, a behavioral medicine specialist at the Pain Treatment Center. Information centered on the signs young professionals can look for and how to overcome career burnout. YPAL just recently finished a four-part Career Management Workshop Series. Topics included conducting an effective job search and how to turn an interview into a job offer. The July issue of the LYPA newsletter will spore a new image. The newsletter has been named The LYPA Link, which reflects LYPAs mission to link the young professional generation together.
