YOUNG PROFESSIONALS - September 2002

Louisville and Lexington young professionals make an impact

The Lexington Young Professionals Association (LYPA) and the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL) have been working over the summer to get their names and talents out in the community.

LYPA members are making a direct impact on several issues as part of the Bluegrass Tomorrow Young Professionals Advisory Committee (BTYPAC). In support of LYPA’s mission, the goal of this committee is to make Lexington a more inviting place for young professionals. Some areas the group focuses on include downtown housing and redevelopment; “mixed use” developments that have residential, retail and office space all in one area; and “brain drain.” BTYPAC has shared its concerns with city planners, government officials and developers.

LYPA was featured as the Community Organization of the Night at the Lexington Legends baseball game on August 21, with a booth set up at the entrance to provide information. The evening offered a great chance not only for LYPA to get its name in front of the community, but also for LYPA members to have a lot of fun.

In partnership with the Downtown Lexington Corporation, LYPA has also spent the summer volunteering to help serve beverages at the “Thursday Night Live” events at the courthouse.

LYPA members were able to beat the August heat with a special wine tasting social at Chrisman Mill Winery. This was the second year for the event, and owners Chris and Denise Nelson were very excited to have LYPA back. LYPA members got to sample several varieties of Chrisman Mill wine and hear explanations about the way each variety was made.

YPAL was one of the sponsors for this summer’s “Summer Twilight Safari Party” at the Louisville Zoo, along with National City, Buffalo Trace, Business First and Cumberland Brews. The evening allowed YPAL members to join old friends or meet new ones at an adults-only event that featured live music by the Ron Jones Trio, a cash bar and complimentary appetizers.

The third annual YPALooza event was held during Labor Day weekend in conjunction with the University of Louisville Alumni Association. The event, held at the Rock Creek Riding Club, featured several bands, free food and cocktails. The sponsors were the University of Louisville Alumni Association and Fischer’s Packing Company.
