Was New or It Grew
The official list of new and expanded industries in
Kentucky for 2000
The
year 2000 saw continued growth in the Kentucky economy.
Thanks to avoiding the dot-com fever that grabbed
numerous business story headlines throughout most of last
year, the Commonwealth’s economy suffered no major
setbacks from the onset of the dot-bombs beginning last
fall. Instead, a strong manufacturing base only grew
stronger and more diversified.
Last
year, a total of 37 new manufacturing companies invested
a total of more than $1 billion in order to locate new
facilities in Kentucky. These companies represented a
broad variety of industries, from a $600 million
coal-fired power plant to a $380,000 conveyor systems
manufacturer. An estimated 3,165 new jobs were created by
these companies.
A
total of 969 manufacturers expanded their Kentucky
operations in 2000, adding 12,764 jobs and investing more
than $2.9 billion, according to the annual survey
conducted by the state’s Cabinet for Economic
Development. Many of the growing firms are found
somewhere in the automotive industry supply chain,
whether it’s injection-molded plastics, formed
metal, brakes or seat belt components. The metals sector
was active as well, led by North American Stainless,
which is creating 150 new jobs and investing $200 million
in new equipment and infrastructure at its facility in
Ghent.
The
following list has been edited to show all new and
expanding manufacturing firms in the state whose
investment exceeded $1,000,000, a total of 265 companies
out of the 1,006 total. That 741-company difference
illustrates the strong role traditionally played by so
many smaller businesses, making incremental but crucial
improvements in their operations.
One
caveat: the dollar amounts listed come from an assortment
of sources, chief among them an annual survey of the
state’s over-6,000 manufacturers. Company leaders
are asked to write in the total amount of their
investment among other items, and some of those projected
figures may be subject to change.
