New and expanded industries invest more than $1.7 billion in Kentucky
The Kentucky Cabinet
for Economic Development’s official list of the new and expanded
industries that came to Kentucky in 2001 reveals, among other things,
an upsurge in automotive suppliers locating in the state.
Some $1.745 billion
was invested in new or expanded businesses in Kentucky last year. Among
the new companies, automotive suppliers dominated in both the number
of jobs created and in money invested. The top investment in creating
or expanding a manufacturing facility was $77 million for the Akebono
automotive brake pad plant in Springfield, with second place going to
the $52 million invested in Bourbon County’s CMC/CLA automotive
wheel plant (creating 161 new jobs).
The only investment
surpassing those in any category was the whopping $717.5 million invested
at the Kentucky Western Power waste coal electric generating station
in Marshall County (creating 126 new jobs).
A wide variety of
other businesses chose to locate or expand operations in the Bluegrass
State last year. Four distillers (Boulevard, Maker’s Mark, Jim
Beam and Buffalo Trace) expanded facilities, while companies as diverse
as L’Oreal (which created 284 new jobs in Boone County with a $40
million investment) and Simpson County’s Pig Improvement Co. ($261,000
invested) helped create a better economic future for the state.
The diversity of
Kentucky’s economic expansion includes a $1.6 million plant in
Louisville for processing frozen White Castle hamburgers; a $30 million
facility in Maysville for making auto parts and radios for Mitsubishi;
a $17 million egg processing plant in Todd County for Cal-Maine Foods;
and, one of the more interesting expansions in the service industry,
a $678,000 investment in Covington’s Funeralcentral.com facility,
creating 47 new high-tech jobs.
