Athens of the West
From its inception, The Lane Report was a Lexington publication. It’s since grown to cover the entire state, and now it strives to provide insightful and essential analysis of Kentucky’s economy and business communities. Whether it’s about Thoroughbreds or Corvettes, we’ve consistently reported the perspectives of Kentucky’s leaders on Kentucky’s business.
King Coal
From Western to Eastern Kentucky, coal has for decades been a mainstay of the state’s economy. We’ve covered the industry from the ground up – from the opening and closing of coal mines, to the rebirth of demand for Kentucky’s black gem, to clean coal technologies like those at this Eastern Kentucky Power Cooperative plant in Maysville. We’ve also told stories of community leaders like David Cartmell, mayor of Maysville, who are once again embracing coal as an economic salvation for local economies.
Western Kentucky
We wrote about the construction of the William H. Natcher Bridge near Owensboro, which was finished in 2002, and how it fits into the state’s economic growth. It is the only cable-supported, A-frame bridge in Kentucky. And The Lane Report is the only state-wide publication that covers business in Western Kentucky – not to mention every other corner of the Commonwealth.

Louisville
As the largest market in Kentucky and the 16th largest city in the United States, Louisville has become one of the primary focuses of The Lane Report since it began covering statewide business. There has been a buzz of optimism lately among the city’s business community, as the recently merged government continues revitalizing its downtown and bridging the gaps between suburbia, city and industry.
Takeoff
Rapid growth of the Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky Airport has spurred economic development across Cincinnati’s “southern side.” The Lane Report has covered the major Delta and Comair hub through nearly all its changes and challenges, and will continue to do so as the airport further fuels the region’s and the state’s overall growth.
Horsemen
Kentucky’s signature workers are arguably the men – and women – who support the sport of kings. Farrier Colby Tipton, one of a handful who shod Smarty Jones before he went on the win the 2004 Kentucky Derby, was among the many equine professionals who have appeared in The Lane Report – not to mention veterinarians, owners, trainers, jockeys, investors and backside workers.
The Speed of Sound
Companies like Eminence Speaker in Eminence, Ky., have a way of showing up all over the world. Chances are, an Eminence product has been behind the sound of nearly every major American or British rock band at concerts on six continents. For 20 years, The Lane Report has specialized in writing about the little-known but well connected manufacturers in Kentucky. As the years progress, we’re bound to stumble upon a few more.
The Medicine State
Whether it’s cosmetic surgery – as was the case on Dr. Tim Brown and this photo, taken at Louisville’s Associates in Dermatology in 2004 – or nearly any other field of medicine, Kentucky has some of the world’s leading physicians. With that come a giant health care industry and plenty of access to health care. The Lane Report has been navigating the twists and turns of the complex health care industry since the magazine launched in 1985, and will continue to do so as it grows even more.

Shopping, Anyone?
Thousands of gift hunters shuffle through retail stores during the holidays, especially at giants like Dillard’s, which we profiled in 1999. We covered the company’s efforts to turn around and repackage itself to consumers in Kentucky . Today, the Arkansas-based company is still one of the most successful retails chains in the country.
