The Postsecondary Education Improvement Act created the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), which provides accessible and affordable education through academic and technical associate degrees; diploma and certificate programs in occupational fields; pre-baccalaureate education; adult, continuing and development education; customized training for business and industry and distance learning programs. KCTCS colleges are: Ashland CC, Ashland TC, Bowling Green TC, Central Ky. TC, Cumberland Valley TC, Elizabethtown CC, Elizabethtown Technical CC, Hazard CC, Hazard TC, Henderson CC, Hopkinsville CC, Jefferson CC, Jefferson TC, Laurel TC, Madisonville CC, Madisonville TC, Maysville CC, Mayo TC, Northern Ky. TC, Owensboro CC, Owensboro TC, Paducah CC, Prestonsburg CC, Rowan TC, Somerset CC, Somerset TC, Southeast CC and West Ky. TC.
Kentucky State University (KSU) was founded in 1886 and is the only historically African-American institution of higher education in Kentucky. Approximately 2,500 students are enrolled at KSU, which also employs 130 full-time faculty members (more than two-thirds of which hold the highest degree in their field). KSU offers courses of study in more than 50 academic areas. Students have a choice of 29 bachelor degree programs and a masters degree program in public administration as well as a masters degree program in aquaculture/ aquatic science that will begin in fall 1999. For the fall semester, tuition for an in-state resident is $1,920; for an outside resident it is $5,760.
LCC provides associate degree programs focused on career-oriented curricula and transferable prebaccalaureate curricula; associate in arts and associate in science degrees are awarded to students planning to transfer into a baccalaureate program at a four-year institution. LCCs tuition for full-time residents is $978.99 per semester ($2,598.00 for non-residents).
Founded in 1865, Lexington Theological Seminary is a fully accredited graduate theological institution welcoming students from all denominations. Approximately 200 students are enrolled (40 percent of whom are women) seeking personal and spiritual growth, academic development and professional training. The institution offers three degrees: Master of Divinity, the basic degree which prepares women and men for one of the many forms of professional service in the church; Doctor of Ministry, degree that offers an opportunity to develop ministerial skills through an advanced level of integrated theory and practice; and Master of Arts, which is primarily for lay people who want to increase their knowledge of Christianity and the church or to enrich their personal faith.
Located on the Ohio River, Maysville Community College is a state-assisted community college and is one of 28 institutions that comprise the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Founded in 1968, Maysville CC serves an average of 1,300 students a semester offering courses in seven locations including Maysville CC Licking Valley Center in Cynthiana. Maysville offers Associate in Applied Science degrees, Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees for transfer to a four-year institution. The school also offers improvement of basic skills for educationally deprived students, technical skills for jobs in business and industry along with non-credit courses and cultural events. Faculty members are composed of professional educators dedicated to helping students. Tuition at Maysville CC is currently $595 a semester for a full-time, in-state student.
