KENTUCKY COLLEGE GUIDE
- September 1999 Spencerian College Since 1892, Spencerian College has stood for quality career education, while focusing on student needs and is positioned to prepare its graduates to meet the employment needs of the next century. With a main campus in Louisville and a Lexington branch, Spencerian offers year-round classes beginning every 12 weeks. Short-term, high-demand programs in technical training, flexible day or evening classes, and a four-day school week demonstrate Spencerians flexibility. Students can earn a certificate in nine months, a diploma in 12 months, or an associate degree in as few as 18 months. Tuition rates are subject to the different programs ranging from $9,660 to $19,980. The range in tuition rates correlates with the length of the program.
Sullivan College is Kentuckys largest regionally accredited private four-year college or university. Sullivan is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelors and masters degrees. The colleges enrollment at its Louisville, Lexington and Fort Knox campuses exceeded 2,700 in the fall of 1998. Additionally, Sullivans new Graduate School of Business has sustained tremendous growth. The colleges new library facility at its Louisville campus is scheduled to open in time for the winter quarter of 1999. Not only is Transylvania the sixteenth oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S., it is also consistently recognized by publications such as U.S. News & World Report and Barons Best Buys in College Education. As a distinguished national liberal arts college, Transylvania offers a small student-to-faculty ratio, more than 50 student organizations as well as 15 varsity sports. Many Transy students study abroad, and the university offers a semester-long program at Regents College in London, England. The Career Development Center prepares students by assisting students in obtaining internships and part-time jobs as they start to prepare for the job market. Many graduates of Transylvania are accepted to prominent medical and law schools and competitive graduate programs.
Wanting to offer the most advanced facilities and technologies, UK broke ground in May on a new Center for Networking Excellence. Fall 1999 will see the debut of ResNet, which will offer students high-speed Internet access from their own dorm rooms. Spring 2000 is scheduled to see the completion of UKs new career center that will offer one of the nations largest and most technological career resource centers as the university helps students choose careers and land jobs. Tuition for the 1999-2000 academic year will be $3,296 in-state ($9,216 out-of-state) with room and board, which includes a meal plan, estimated at $3,770.
Emphasizing outside-the-classroom experiences, students are encouraged to participate in internships, research projects and community service programs as they practice classroom theory in real-world settings. UofLs schools and colleges are numerous and include: allied health sciences, arts and sciences, business and public administration, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine, music, nursing and social work. Student-guided walking tours are offered to give you a first-hand look at the university. Tuition for in-state residents is presently at $1,623 per semester (as opposed to $4,583 for out-of-state students).
Since 1906, Western Kentucky University (WKU) has provided a quality education with a reputation for personal attention and the kind of hands-on experience that makes Western graduates competitive in todays workforce. With an enrollment of nearly 15,000 students, WKU combines excellent teaching with opportunities for positive experiences outside of the classroom to continue producing competitive graduates. WKUs four undergraduate colleges offer more than 140 programs for undergraduate students and more than 50 options are available to graduate students. The main campus commands a hilltop overlooking Bowling Green and includes more than 68 buildings. Western Kentucky also offers educational programs through its extended campuses in Glasgow, Owensboro and Elizabethtown/Ft. Knox.
